COURSES
AS PART OF THE BASKET FAIR
AT PORTHLEVEN, CORNWALL, 9th - 21st June 2003
The
fair will be highlighting the Celtic links between Cornwall and
its neighbours across the sea in Ireland, Brittany and Spain. It
will also explore the thread of baskets made ‘upside down’ in jigs
or in the ground. Examples of this method of construction exist
in all four places, for example creels found in Ireland and Cornwall
share a common form.
Course
Costs
All two day courses are £80 except Martin
Orchard’s course, and beginners basketmaking on the 20/21st which
are £70 for the two days,. Includes refreshments (but not lunch)
Tuition
Will run from 9.30 to 4.30 on each day
Materials
Inclusive for one basket (and the jig
on the Breton basket course) Some tools will be available but we
recommend that you bring your own (bodkin, knife, rapping iron,
secateurs) if you have them. Please indicate on the booking sheet
if you do not have tools so that I can arrange some for you to borrow.
Accommodation:
There is a limited amount of self catering,
dormitory accommodation available at Chyvarloe (where most of the
courses will be held) This is a National Trust base camp near to
the coast – ½ hour walk to Porthleven along the shore at low tide.
Cost will be £10 per night. This accommodation is also available
for people not attending courses. Please ask for details.

Falmouth Art College/Eden Research Project, 9th – 13th June
A workshop to build a traditional Bunbeg currach, whilst simultaneously
developing innovative design ideas by integrating and applying
traditional skills and materials to several other boat structures,
to be launched at the Basket Fair. This course has developed
from work with students on the course at the college, but there
are places available for anyone who would like to participate
in this exciting event. £100 for the 5 days. |

TWO
DAY COURSES;
Eel
traps or asparagus baskets with Colin Manthorpe,
Thursday 12th and Friday13th June
Colin will teach a Dutch style eel trap and the oblong basket
used for holding harvested asparagus- this can also be made
with a handle and partition to be used to carry a flask and
sandwiches. For basketmakers with some experience. £80 for two
day course. |

Small
sciobs or Irish style crab pots with Joe Hogan,
Thursday 12th and Friday 13th June
This class will give you the opportunity to make traditional
Irish baskets in brown willow, some lovely colours and varieties
provided. The crab pot is made with stakes pushed into the ground
Beginners/all levels. £80 for two day course. |

Frame
baskets with Lee Dalby, Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th June
Lee has made frame baskets for many years in sizes ranging from
small to boat size, see the article about his work in B.A newsletter
no 101 (Summer 2002). A variety of coloured bark willows will
be provided. £80 for two day course |

Breton
baskets with Philippe Guerinel, Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th
June
Philippe is from the Perigord region
of France and will be helped with translation by Francois Desplanches.
His speciality is the Perigord basket but on this course he
will be teaching the Breton basket which is made upside down
using a jig. Making the jig will be part of the course. Beginners
and intermediate £80 for two day course |

Spanish
baskets with Lluis Grau, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th June
Lluis will teach the upside down
basket which is made in Galicia in North West Spain as well
as Catalan style basketmaking. Beginners and intermediate £80
for two day course |

Cornish
basketmaking with Martin Orchard, Wednesday 18th and Thursday
19th June
Martin’s father was a basketmaker
and he specialises in teaching the local Cornish baskets. He
will teach a blackberry picking basket with an underfoot base.

Basketry
starting from a round base with Geraldine Jones Friday 20th
and Saturday 21st June
Learn basic basketry techniques
or develop ideas for experimental work with help from Geraldine,
who has been basketmaking at the Salt Cellar in Porthleven for
over ten years. Suitable for all levels of ability £70 for two
day course |

Basketry
starting from a square base with Hilary Burns Friday 20th and
Saturday 21st June
Using a variety of coloured bark
willows, weave a trug or garden basket. Hilary has been responsible
for running City and Guilds basketry programmes in the South
West whilst working as a respected and sought after professional
basketmaker. Suitable for all levels of ability, £70 for two
day course. |
